3 Questions to Decide Your Headshot Style
By Matthew on December 22, 2019
Relaxed professional. Vibrant creative. El Queso Grande. Which headshot style is right for you? Well, it depends, so let’s dig in.
Who are you?
The core function of a headshot is to communicate who you are, so start by figuring out what aspects of you you’re trying to communicate. Are you trying to convey a sense of polished style, or of creative eccentricity? Do you need to be in a modern office to feel at home? Does your spirit soar in nature?
Who are they?
All of the thoughts above should be checked against the values of whomever you’re trying to convince that you’re the right person for the role. Imagine that you feel at peace in a field of sunflowers but are applying for a conservative financial position. Would that field of sunflowers resonate with a hiring manager that needs a ninja rockstar fast-paced self-starter? There is no right answer, it is about finding a happy medium where you’re comfortable and confident.
Where are you going?
The last piece of the puzzle is to think about the industry and role you’re looking to get into. Certain industries have certain styles that may help you be recognized as a sort of a known quantity. For instance, the financial world would probably feel more comfortable from the get-go with someone in a sharp, conservative suit rather than chinos and an avocado shirt. However, a marketing agency might feel the opposite. A quick browse of your ideal organization’s website or social media can be a good barometer of their workplace dress and culture.
